NAIROBI, 23th August 2023 - The University of Nairobi is pleased to announce the official opening of Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) for Peace and Environmental Studies by His Excellency President William Ruto. The event will take place on 28th August 2023, at 10.00am at the WMI campus in Upper Kabete .
Established in honor of the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies aims to advance research, education, and sustainable development efforts in the fields of peacebuilding and environmental studies. The WMI is endorsed as a centre of excellence by the African Union.
The official opening ceremony will be attended by Hon.Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Center on Adaptation and Distinguished Chair of Wangari Maathai Institute, Dr.Vijoo Rattansi, Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Representatives of Africa Union, Representatives of Africa Development Bank, High ranking government officials, local and international dignitaries, environmentalists, scholars, students and representatives from various stakeholder organizations. The event will also feature keynote speeches, tree planting and media engagements.
