The University of Nairobi (UoN) is proud to celebrate the achievements of Matrona Mbendo Akiso, a PhD scholar & researcher at KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), whose work was recently highlighted during the launch of the Illumina MiSeq i100 system.

Matrona, a passionate advocate for advancing women’s health through genomics, participated in the hands-on introduction of the new sequencing technology, which promises to expand capacity for next-generation sequencing (NGS) in Africa.

In her interview, she shared insights on how genomic science is shaping women’s health research and how the MiSeq i100 can enhance the precision and efficiency of ongoing projects at KAVI-ICR, University of Nairobi. 

Her feature reflects the University’s commitment to harnessing cutting-edge science to address Africa’s pressing health challenges, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, and cancer.
